Meghalaya on March 9th, 2019 got its first modern shambles built at a cost of Rs 21.67 crore at Mawiong. It may be mentioned that the National Agricultural Bank for Rural Development (NABARD) had sanctioned the shambles, which has a capacity of slaughtering 240 cattle, 240 pigs and 160 goats a day, way back in 2010, Veterinary Department director C Shylla said.

The deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said the people in the city will now get quality and hygienic meat from the abattoir as the meat will pass through stringent quality checks by veterinarians. “The slaughterhouse is equipped with effluent treatment plant for scientifically managing the solid and liquid waste emanating from it,” he said.

Tynsong also said the demand for meat in Meghalaya remains very high throughout the year which has prompted many people to take up livestock rearing as a full-time occupation.
