    Meghalaya Registers New COVID-19 Positive Case, State Tally Rises To 12

    Out of the 11 active cases, eight people are the family members, one family friend and two are helpers of the first COVID-19 patient

    One more person has been detected with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection in Meghalaya, taking the State’s tally to 12.

    The fresh case is one of the family friends of the first coronavirus positive patient, informed Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.

    Sangma said that the new COVID-19 patient is now in a quarantine centre. At present, there are 11 active cases and one death.

    Out of the 11 active cases, eight people are the family members, one family friend and two are helpers of the first COVID-19 patient.

    Meghalaya’s first COVID-19 positive patient was a 69-year-old senior doctor of a Shillong-based hospital. He died on April 15th, 2020.

    Sangma urged elderly citizens to refrain from going out as far as possible.  

    “We have seen throughout the world that the virus affects the elderly more. Therefore, I would urge our elderly, our senior citizens to refrain from going out to crowded places. They should keep themselves safe because this virus is something that we have seen throughout the world affects the elderly more,” the Chief Minister said.

    On concerns regarding labours from other States stranded in Meghalaya, Sangma clarified that daily wage earners, who are stranded in the State are taken care of by the State government through respective Deputy Commissioners.  

    The Chief Minister informed that financial aid under Chief Minister’s Special Grant for individuals stranded in different parts of the country is under process, wherein students and working professionals will be given lumps support of Rs 3000 each. 

    He informed that a list of 1,617 people stranded in different parts of the country has already been prepared and the grant will be transferred. 

    He also urged parents and guardians to ensure that their children/wards do not venture out in the localities and engage in outdoor games in locality streets.
