Meghalaya: Six killed on spot as truck rams into four-wheeler

Guwahati: At least six people were killed in a tragic road accident in Meghalaya’s Ri Bhoi district on Sunday.

The incident occurred at 2.30 pm at Umbang village when the vehicle collided with a cement-laden truck.

According to sources, the truck was headed to Guwahati and rammed a car, which was en route to Shillong, carrying the priest and the team coming from the opposite direction.

As a result, all six died on the spot, sources said.

The deceased include priests and nuns of a Catholic school in Assam’s Bongaigaon, officials said.

The victims were identified as Father Mathew Das, Milagrine Dantes, Mairan, Promila Tirkey, Rossie Nongrum and Sanjay Swargiary (driver).

Meanwhile, the driver of the truck and his assistant suffered injuries, and are undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital, officials said.

However, the bodies have been taken to Nongpho Civil hospital for autopsy.

On Sunday too, a polling officer died in the West Garo Hills district in a road accident. The accident happened when the vehicle in which he was travelling overturned, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) FR Kharkongor said.

The vehicle was carrying polling officials en route to Jangrapara LP School met with an accident at a remote village.
