Guwahati: Regarding the incident of Khasi villagers being threatened at Atukul village in Cachar district of Assam, Meghalaya DGP R Chandranathan contacted senior police officials of Assam on Tuesday.
During the discussion, the Director General of Police was informed that the Khasi villagers were taking shelter inside a Church, which is being guarded by police officials.
“The sub-divisional police officer of the area had also visited the premises where the villagers are taking refuge and the matter is being superintended by the concerned police officials,” said assistant inspector general of police, Meghalaya, GK Iangrai.
Meghalaya police also urged the general public not to circulate rumours which may incite a breach of communal peace and harmony.
The Hmar People’s Convention – Democratic (HPC-D) had allegedly demanded Rs 8 lakh from the Khasi residents of Cachar district, following a series of circumstances which led to the arrest of three HPC-D members by Assam Police.
The organisation has reportedly held the Khasi residents of Atukhal, Cachar district responsible for the arrests and threatened to shoot them.
