Minor abuse case | Maneka Gandhi asks Assam Govt to take stern action

Guwahati, January 2: Following the reports of sexual assault of a 13-year-old minor girl by her foster father in Karimganj for months, Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi has urged the Assam government to take stern and immediate action into the matter.

Maneka has also asked Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to ensure justice for the child who has been facing sexual abuse at the hands of her foster father who is absconding.

The incident came to light last week after Diba Roy, Secretary of Silchar-based Nivedita Nari Sangstha approached the Centre with the case how the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) declared the foster family as a “fit family” under the law to care for a girl child after the minor had complained twice about the inappropriate touch by the foster father and how the CWC has ignored the facts and asked the girl to return to her foster family until on August 30, the foster mother surrendered the girl back.

Meanwhile, the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA), India’s premier adoption and foster care review body has asked the Deputy Commissioner, Cachar to send an action-taken report to the Centre in this case.

It may be mentioned, the case falls under aggravated sexual assault defined as an assault by a person in a position of trust.
