Aizawl, November 8: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday set up a high-level committee headed by a deputy election commissioner to hold talks with protestors seeking ouster of the Mizoram poll panel chief S B Shashank.
Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer Shashank said that he has been summoned by the ECI and would meet the poll panel in the national capital on Thursday. The CEO left for New Delhi on Wednesday by an evening flight.
The election to the 40-member Assembly in Mizoram will be held on November 28. The results will be out on December 11.
Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh “to restore the status quo” after the Election Commission removed Mizoram’s principal secretary (home) Lalnunmawia Chuaungo for stopping displaced Brus from voting.
The poll panel had removed Chaungo after receiving a complaint by chief electoral officer SB Shashank.
