Mizoram CM Meets PM Modi Seeking Centre’s Nod To NRC-Like Bill

Mizoram Maintenance of Household Register Bill was passed by the state Assembly in 2019

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga called on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking Centre’s nod to National Register of Citizens-like bill in the state aimed at detecting foreigners.

Zoramthanga, who met the PM on January 23rd, 2020, sought Modi’s intervention to ensure that the Mizoram Maintenance of Household Register Bill, 2019 is immediately cleared by the central government and implemented in the state. It may be mentioned that the state shares an over 700-km border with Bangladesh and Myanmar.

“The bill seeks to identify genuine residents of the state and will also help to check arms smuggling, drugs and human trafficking across the border,” officials here said.

It needs to be mentioned that the Bill was passed by the state assembly on March 18th, 2019 and sent to the governor for his assent. “The Governor Kummanam Rajasekharan had referred the bill to the Centre,” the official said.

In Assam, the NRC has been updated after a six-year-long process excluding 19,06,657 people. The final list was published on August 31st, 2019. The process of NRC Update was started in the state of Assam as per the order of the Supreme Court of India in 2013. Since then, the Apex Court has been closely monitoring the entire process.

A similar nationwide exercise has also been proposed, which triggered massive protests across the country. However, the prime minister has clarified that there has been no discussion on it.
