Shillong, April 15: In a shocking incident Meghalaya police arrested one of its own officers for allegedly raping a woman inside her tea stall in February.
A.R. Mawthoh, Deputy Inspector-General, Eastern Range, Meghalaya informed the media that the victim filed an FIR saying the officer in charge of the Mawngap police station raped her on February 2.
He further informed that the accused OC has been arrested in Kolkata, where he was undergoing training, and brought back to Shillong on Friday.
According to NCRB records, in 2017, the police recorded 238 cases of rapes, including two of gang-rape. There were 137 other cases that included assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty, and cruelty by husbands or relatives.
Also in 2017, 298 cases were registered under the POCSO Act where some of the crimes involved boys.
