An unruly mob attacked a team of policemen who were enforcing lockdown to prevent the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Assam’s Lakhimpur district on the night of May 1st, 2020.
The incident took place at Pandhua Kuet area under Naoboicha Police Station where a mob gathered near a mosque and attacked the security personnel by pelting stones.
As per reports, four police personnel were injured in a mob attack. The mob also damaged the police vehicle by pelting stones.
According to reports, a large number of people had gathered at the mosque after roza-iftar. There is also a market in the area.
Upon receiving the information of gathering, the police team of Naoboicha police station visited the Pandhua Kuet area to enforce the lockdown and social distancing protocols to arrest the spread of the deadly coronavirus.
As soon as the police reached the area, a few started pelting stones at the police. Officer-in-charge of Naoboicha Police Station and three other security personnel were injured in the mob attack.
Additional security personnel were dispatched to rescue the injured personnel.
Assam has registered 42 COVID-19 positive cases of which 29 have been discharged and one patient has died. At present, there are 12 active COVID-19 cases in the State.
