As the Northeast region is boiling over the issue of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill issue, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 2nd, 2019 urged the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to lend full support to the contentious Citizenship Bill in the Parliament.
Addressing a rally in Thakurnagar area of West Bengal’s 24 North Parganas district, he said, “I urge the Mamata Banerjee led TMC government to support the Citizenship Bill because my brothers and sisters here need it. The Hindus, Sikhs, Parsis and Christians have nowhere else to go but India. And that’s why we are bringing the citizenship law.”

“Today by looking at the response from the people of Thakurnagar, I understood why Banerjee has been resorting to violence against her political opponents,” he added. It may be mentioned that on February 2nd, 2019 Modi started the Bharatiya Janata Party’s campaign for Lok Sabha elections in the state.
“After independence, thousands of people including the Hindus, Sikhs, Christians and Parsis had to take shelter in India due to communal violence. These refugees should get the right to citizenship. India is the only place that can provide them shelter,” Modi said.
