    Money for Marks Scam: Board to declare results by July 31; Probe Ordered

    Assam leader of opposition Debabrata Saikia has sought state chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s intervention

    Guwahati: The Board of Secondary Education Assam (SEBA) to declare class X results as per the evaluation module prepared by the expert committee. Though there were rumours that the board may modify the evaluation formula after state police busted money for marks scam

    Assam Police has recently unearthed a scam of awarding higher marks in class 10 and 12 state board examinations in lieu of money and arrested two persons from Kamrup district. Earlier, state government cancelling the board exams said that an internal assessment would give marks to the students.

    The police have detained four others also, including a school inspector and coordinator of the state board, for their alleged the scam.

    A SEBA official clarified, “Those who were involved in the scam were already removed or transferred from the process and we are almost done with the marking process. SEBA will declare the results by July 31.”

    Meanwhile, Assam education minister Ranoj Pegu has ordered education department secretary Dhrubajoyoi Das to set up a probe in the entire matter and submit a detailed report within 15 days.

    The minister said, “There was a rumour that the suspected inspector of schools identified as one Madhab Deka did not face action. We have transferred him to head office so that he can be examined properly.”

    Assam leader of opposition Debabrata Saikia has sought state chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s intervention in the ‘money for marks’ scam that has shocked the entire state. He also suggested the CM to rethink on the marking module for the board exams.

    Saikia on Monday shot a letter to Sarma and said, “The discovery of the scam has raised concern about the marking system. Therefore, the chief minister must rethink on the system and upgrade the students with proper scientific way of marking. I request the chief minister’s personal intervention to secure the future of the lakhs of students of the state.”

    Earlier, principal of Majortop Higher Secondary School in Goroimari, Akkas Ali, and office assistant at inspector of schools Prashanta Das were arrested.
