Moral Policing In Tinsukia: FIR Lodged, No Arrest So Far; Police Assure Action

An FIR has been lodged following the lynching of a woman and her son to death in Tinsukia district of Assam. However, no arrest has been made so far at the time of filing this report.

On June 7th, 2019, an angry mob attacked a woman and her son with rods, sticks and kicks at Sewpur Tea Estate in Rongpuria area of the district, located 485 km east of Guwahati.

The mother, Jamuna Tanti, died of her injuries on the spot, while her son Ajay succumbed to injuries in hospital on June 8th, 2019. A video of the barbaric attack has now surfaced on social media platforms. In the video, when the incident took place at that time surprisingly the policemen were present there but no one prevented the crowd from attacking the woman and her son.

The mother-son duo was attacked after the body of Ajay’s wife Radha was recovered from a septic tank near their house. Radha was missing since June 5th, 2019, as per the locals.

An FIR (No 805/19) under IPC Section 143/144/147/149/302/102 (B)/353/429 at the Tinsukia Police Station. “We are investigating the matter. The accused persons will be netted soon,” said Ripunjoy Kakati, Additional Superintendent of Police, Tinsukia.

However, there is no trace yet of the couple’s two-month-old daughter who has also been missing since June 5th, 2019.
