Assam Congress MP Abdul Khaleque on August 10th, 2019 alleged the National Register of Citizens (NRC) authorities of harassing people by serving fresh re-verification notices.
“The common man should not be harassed for the NRC credentials. In the name of verification, the local people are being harassed time and again. The people who suffered monetary loses to appear for the re-verification hearing, should be given a compensation amount of Rs 1 lakh,” said Khaleque.
The MP said people are being called to attend hearings at distant places within short notice, causing considerable inconvenience to the entire family.
A few days back, Rajya Sabha MP and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Ripun Bora had written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah urging him to intervene and stop the re-verification of the NRC draft list.
On the other hand, he alleged that the state’s flood and erosion problems were not in the priority list for the Modi-led central government. “Assam has witnessed devastating flood this year but the Centre’s response has not been satisfactory,” he said.
