Guwahati: Musical stalwart and renowned flautist Prabhat Sharma passed away on early hours on Tuesday in Guwahati. He was 86.
Sharma breathed his last around 6:00 am at his residence. Reportedly, he was suffering from a prolonged ailment. He is survived by his wife and daughter Tarali Sharma, an acclaimed Assamese singer.
Prabhat Sharma was a maestro of folk and traditional music of Assam. He managed a folk music troupe – Debogandhar – which performed folk music with various traditional music instruments.
For his contribution to music, he was also awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi award and Life Time Achievement. He combined in him a singer, composer, director and accompanist.
Expressing his grief on the sad demise of the great personality of Assam, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal wrote in Twitter: “We are saddened by the loss of renowned musician and playwright Prabhat Sharma. He will be remembered for his invaluable contribution in the journey of music in Assam. In this moment of mourning, extend our deepest condolences to Sharma’s family and loved ones and wish him eternal peace.”
Assam cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma too expressed his grief saying, “Prominent musician, folk music devotee Prabhat Sharma has passed away. Sangeet Natak Academy Award winner Sharmadev’s demise created a void in the cultural world of the state. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and wish them all the best.”
