Nagaland Ambush: Rifleman Kalidas Sharma’s Family Cries For Justice

A pall of gloom has descended in the Mansiri Borajan area in Sonitpur district of Assam following the death of rifleman Kalidas Sharma during a gunfight with suspected NSCN-K militants in Mon area along the Indo-Myanmar border in Nagaland on May 25th, 2019.

It may be mentioned along with Sharma, Naib Subedar Dina Nath Ram, a junior commissioned officer, were martyred after the militants ambushed an Assam Rifles team at Thanyak in between Ukha and Tobu in the Mon district. Four others were injured during a gunfight and are presently undergoing treatment at the Army Hospital in Jorhat.

Sharma is survived by mother, wife and two daughters. “He died for the country, we are proud of him. But we demand justice against such cowardly act of the militants. The government must take action against the militancy activities,” said an uncle of Sharma.

A column of Assam Rifles jawans on two vehicles encountered an IED blast in the area around 1:30 pm. Post the blast, a fierce gun firing took place between the Assam Rifles personnel and the militants in which the soldiers.

It may be mentioned, eleven people, including sitting legislator Tirong Aboh and his son, were gunned down by suspected NSCN-K militants in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap district on May 21st, 2019. The incident had sent shock waves across the country with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh calling it an outrageous attempt to disturb the peace and harmony in the Northeast region of the country.
