The North East Students’ Organization (NESO), an umbrella organization of the students’ bodies of the Northeastern states, on February 6th, 2019 called on the Hindu Nationalist Shiv Sena chairman Uddhav Thackeray (Uddhav Bal Keshav Thackeray) over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and urged him to oppose the ‘contentious’ bill.

Speaking to media persons, All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) chief advisor Samujjal Kumar Bhattachary said, “Thackeray assured us that Shiv Sena would oppose the bill for the greater interest of the indigenous people of the state. He also assured us that he would discuss the matter with other political parties also.”

On the other hand, as part of the AASU’s call, a large number of people from different sections of the society started a protest program called “khilonjiar ronodongka” demanding scrapping of the Citizenship bill from the historic Ranghar premises, where once the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) had started its struggle for independent Assam. The protesters shouted slogans and said they would continue their agitation until the bill is scrapped.
