Guwahati, March 9, 2019
The North East Newspaper Society has announced a three-day boycott of all Assam Government advertisements, any news related to the government and photographs in order to protest against the apathy of the State Government towards the problems faced by newspaper houses of Assam.
The boycott will begin from the March 10th, 2019 issues of the newspapers. The Society observed that while the rates of advertisements have not been revised since 2014, the cost of newsprint, other printing materials and transportation has gone up manifold due to which, the newspaper industry is reeling under a severe financial crisis.
“The newspaper houses did not have any other option but to call for the boycott. If the Government fails to initiate any steps to resolve the issues even after that, the newspaper houses will be forced to take sterner decisions,” a statement from the Society said, as reported in The Assam Tribune. The newspaper houses of Assam are facing a major crisis due to non-clearance of the payments against the advertisements by the government on time.
