Assam Readies For Pushkaram Festival, To Be Held From Nov 5

The Pushkaram festival is organised annually, once in 12 years along each river

The Assam government will host a 12-day Brahmaputra Pushkaram Festival starting from November 5th, 2019 to November 16th, 2019.

The festival will be held on the banks of the Brahmaputra river stretching from Fancy Bazaar area to Bharalamukh in Guwahati. This festival will be the second-biggest river festival in the state after the Namami Brahmaputra festival.

As per reports, around 50,000 sadhus will arrive in the state for the festival and around 5 lakh people are expected to visit the festival. The total estimated cost of the festival will be around Rs 60 crores, reportedly. The festival will allow the government to boost the state tourism sector.

SS Meenakshi Sundaram, commissioner & secretary, department of Industries & Commerce, Assam, has been assigned the task to look after the preliminary work of the festival.

It may be mentioned, Pushkaram is a festival dedicated to worshipping of rivers. It is celebrated at shrines along the banks of 12 major sacred rivers in India, in the form of ancestor worship, spiritual discourses, devotional music and cultural programmes.

The Pushkaram festival is organised annually, once in 12 years along each river. Each river is associated with a zodiac sign. The river for each year’s festival is based on which sign Jupiter is in at the time. Some of the zodiac signs are associated with multiple rivers due to regional variations.
