India’s Dipa Karmakar, who hails from Tripura, made it to the vault finals after finishing third in the qualifying round of the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan.
25-year-old Karmakar performed a higher difficulty Handfront 540 vault for the first time in the competition and she scored 14.466 and 14.133 points in the two qualifying round vaults for an average of 14.299 on March 14th, 2019.
The finals will be held on March 16th, 2019. Karmakar will also take part in the balanced beam event on March 15th, 2019.
Karmakar, who led India in numerous international event and also clinched titles at many national championships, found her among 20 female icons chosen by Mattel for a special edition Barbie Dolls to celebrate the 60th birthday of the iconic character.
Dipa was selected as a Role Model for Mattel among other sportswomen of the world including Naomi Osaka, Chloe Kim, Kristina Vogel, Ibtihaj Muhammad and others. Women from all over the world across many walks of life have been chosen.
