Guwahati, January 26, 2019

Congress president Rahul Gandhi launched a piercing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and stated that he is disturbed by the growing violence and unrest in the Northeast region states. Gandhi alleged that religion and ethnicity are being used as a weapon by the BJP to polarise the region.

“Religion & ethnicity are being used as weapons by the BJP to polarise the region for political gain. This type of politics, that pitches brother against brother & fans hatred, is evil & must be stopped (sic),” tweeted the Congress president on January 25, 2019.

It may be mentioned that the opposition parties in Assam, students’ bodies and the civil societies are protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, claiming it will change the region’s demography and violates the historic 1985 Assam Accord.

Passed by the Lok Sabha on January 8, the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 is yet to be introduced in the Rajya Sabha. The Citizenship Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha in 2016 to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955. The Bill amends the Citizenship Act, 1955 to make illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, eligible for citizenship.

Assamese Vs Hitler

Former Assam Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader Tarun Gogoi said that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 violates the basic principle of secularism, Assam Accord and the National Register of Assam (NRC) which has made the situation of Assam like a “erupting volcano”.

“Himanta Biswa Sarma’s attitude to suppress the agitation exposes the BJP’s fascist methods and he seems to be a newly born Hitler in Assam (sic),” tweeted Gogoi.

Gogoi further stated that India is a democratic country and Assamese people are emotionally associated with the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 issue. “They will defy such Hitler’s method. Also, it appears that there is a competition between Sarma and Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to please Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah in extending their support to Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016,” he added.
