The sleuths of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on June 13th, 2019 arrested Syed Shahjahan (48), Field Level Officer (FLO) of National Register of Citizens (NRC) Sewa Kendra of Dispur at Ganeshguri here while accepting a bribe amount of Rs 10,000.
He was arrested based on a complaint filed by one Kajari Ghosh Dutta of Ananda Nagar, Dispur, Guwahati. The bribe money has been seized from the possession of the accused.
Another Rahul Parasar (27), of the same NRC Sewa Kendra was also found involved to be in the crime. Connected documents have also been seized by the ACB team from the office of the NRC Sewa Kendra.
Shahjahan and Parasar had demanded a bribe for entering the name of Dutta in the draft NRC. The accused had highlighted some technical defects in her application and demanded her the bribe to correct the technical defects and enter her name thereafter into the final draft of NRC.
Dutta had approached the ACB Police Station in the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti Corruption, Assam and a trap was laid down. The accused staffers will be forwarded to the Special Court on June 14th, 2019.
Before the publication of the final updated NRC on July 31st, 2019, the NRC authorities will publish an additional draft list on June 15th, 2019.
On the midnight of December 31st, 2017, Part Draft NRC was released and subsequently on July 30th, 2018, the Complete Draft NRC was released. 28,983,677 persons were found eligible out of 32,991,384 applicants in the final draft of the NRC.
Of these, 37,59,630 names have been rejected and the remaining 2,48,077 are on hold. The Supreme Court has directed to publish the final NRC on July 31st, 2019.
It may be mentioned that as many as 31 lakh of the 40 lakh applicants left out of the final draft of the NRC have filed claims forms for their inclusion in the roster till December 31st, 2018.
Update: Rahul Parasar, Assistant Local Registrar of Citizen Registration (LRCR) of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) Sewa Kendra of Dispur has been suspended following instructions from DC and DRCR, Kamrup Metropolitan District with immediate effect.
