In a major push to infrastructure in the Northeast and Assam, a six-lane bridge will come up over the Brahmaputra river in Guwahati by 2023. The bridge will connect Guwahati and North Guwahati and will reduce travel time from the south bank to north bank of the Brahmaputra from 90 minutes to mere 15 minutes.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Assam PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took part in the Bhoomi Pujan held to mark the start of construction work of the bridge.

“The 1600-m long bridge over the Brahmaputra shall be key to growth of Assam State Capital Region, a 6000 sq km area, by expanding Guwahati Metropolitan area to the North Bank. It shall also reduce travel time between North and South Banks to 15 minutes,” Sarma said.

He added, “The bridge corridor starts from Bharalumukh on the South Bank to NH 31, near Gauripur, on the North Bank. The project includes 3-lane elevated road running along the south bank (1450m) & 6-lane road and via-duct on the North Bank (5230m).”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of six-lane bridge in February 2019.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be around 1,925 crore. The starting point of the corridor will be at Bharalumukh on the south bank of the Brahmaputra and the culmination point will be at NH-31 near Gauripur Junction on North bank of the Brahmaputra.

Sonowal said, “The bridge will be a milestone in our bid to provide state-of-the-art infra in the Gateway to the South East Asian countries. This bridge is yet another example of building a new era big infrastructure unabatedly. “

To bring relief to the growing traffic congestion, Sarma in his Budget Speech 2017-2018 announced the construction of two bridges across river Brahmaputra, one at Panbazar connecting to North Guwahati and the other at Palashbari connecting to Sualkuchi.

A sum of Rs 150 crore is provided in the Budget 2018-19 for construction of the Panbazar Guwahati-North Guwahati Bridge. Another, Rs 100 crore was released for the construction of the bridge connecting Palashbari to Sualkuchi from the State budget in 2017-18.
