New BTC Executive Member Ghanashyam Das was held under POCSO in 2019: Child Right Activist Demands Justice

Police probe revealed that a minor was repeatedly sexually assaulted by a ‘quack’ who called himself 'Baba' Ghanasham Das

GUWAHATI: A day after Ghanashyam Das from Gana Shakti Party (GSP) took oath as the new Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) executive member in Kokrajhar, his past criminal record once again started to haunt him.

In 2019, he was arrested by Guwahati city police on charges of raping and sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl in the guise of treating her. Das was booked under various sections of the IPC and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Child rights activist Miguel Queah who had filed a case against him feared that Das now being a powerful person may influence the pending case against him.

“The victim while working as a maid in the city was being treated by Das. Later it was discovered that she was repeatedly sexually assaulted by a ‘quack’ who called himself ‘Baba’ Ghanasham Das,” said Miguel Queah, POCSO support person for the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in Kamrup (Metro).

Last year on April 8, the girl gave birth to a girl child at a private hospital here. Both of them have been shifted to a home for girls located in the city’s Jalukbari area.

“Das was out on bail and contested the BTC polls. Since he has become an executive member of BTC, we fear that he may influence the pending case against him. I expect justice will be done to the victim and her child,” Queah added.

Police probe had found that Das, who used to visit the city to attend to his patients quite often, had taken a house on rent Bishnu Nagar in the city to treat his patient.  A DNA test was also conducted.
