The Citizenship Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha in 2016 to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955. The Bill amends the Citizenship Act, 1955 to make illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, eligible for citizenship.

Samaguri, January 19: Enraged with the Centre’s bid to pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, the agitators in Puranigudam of Nagaon district on Saturday showed black flags to Assam Bharatiya Janata Party president Ranjeet Kumar Dass
As per reports, Dass was passing through the National Highway 37 to attend an executive meet in the district when the agitators waved the black flags.
The Citizenship Bill was passed at the Lok Sabha. However, the Bill got stalled in the Rajya Sabha after facing strong opposition from the Congress along with other parties.
