Guwahati, January 10: In wake of statewide protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday stated that the government is committed to provide constitutional and economic safeguards to the indigenous people of the state.

“The days of tension will be gone for ever because the government is committed to safeguard the interests of the indigenous people and committed to preserve and promote the cultural, social, linguistic identity and heritage of the Assamese people,” said Sonowal.

He added, “The previous governments did not give any importance to the matter of constitutional safeguard. The constitutional safeguard will ensure protection of mati and bheti (home and hearth), art and culture, language and literature of the indigenous people of Assam and also ensure reservation in the assembly and panchayat seats.”
