Putting an end to speculations and confusion, the Congress leadership has finalised its candidates for the Assam by-elections on October 21st, 2019.
Mukul Wasnik, General Secretary, Incharge Central Election Committee, has finalised the party’s candidates for four Assam constituencies. Keshab Prasad Rajak to contest from Ratabari-SC, Shamsul Hoque from Jania, Kartik Kurmi from Rangapara and Sushil Suri from Sonari.
Sonari, Rangapara, Ratabari and Jania- represented by Tapan Kumar Gogoi, Pallab Lochan Das, Kripanath Malla of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress’ Abdul Khaleque – fell vacant after the Lok Sabha elections this year.
Gogoi, who was the Assam Power Minister, won from the Jorhat parliamentary seat, Das, who was the Assam Labour Welfare Minister, won from the Tezpur parliamentary seat.
On the other hand, Khaleque won from the Barpeta parliamentary constituency and Mallah, who was the Deputy Speaker, won from Karimganj (SC) parliamentary seat.
The bypoll election is going to be a direct fight between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The ruling party is confident of winning the three seats – Sonari, Rangapara and Ratabari. Jania is a Congress’ stronghold.
Congress is going to cash in on the ‘anomalies’ in the National Register of Citizens, Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and ‘failures’ of the BJP. The ruling party is yet to announce the names of candidates for the four seats.
Meanwhile, perfume baron-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) is going to field candidate only in Jania. Hafiz Rafikul Islam is the AIUDF candidate for the Jania constituency.
The last date of nominations is September 30th, 2019. The last date to withdraw the poll nomination is October 3rd, 2019. The results of the elections will be announced on October 24th, 2019.
