Guwahati, December 28: The students, activists and allies will stage a protest on Friday against the “offensive and undemocratic” Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2018.
The Lok Sabha passed the Transgender Persons Protection of Rights Bill on December 17, 2018. The Bill is awaiting ratification in the upper house, the Rajya Sabha. The Bill has been highly controversial among the trans, intersex, and gender non-conforming communities.
The protest will be staged at Dighalipukhuri here at around 5 pm.
“The Bill is against the trans people and promotes deliberate exclusion of diverse community voices. We urge the people to come out in support of the trans people and oppose the Bill,” said Abhishek Chakraborty, LGBTQ activist.
According to the Bill, the members of the trans community have to undergo ‘screening committees’ to determine if a person is trans or not.
“The Bill prohibits begging and sex work and the Bill labels intersex people as trans. The Bill does not distinguish between voluntary sex work and trafficking,” he added, who is also associated with a collective ‘Xomonnoy’.
The country officially recognized transgender as a third sex in a landmark ruling in 2014.
