A hardcore cadre of the banned Karbi People’s Liberation Tiger (KPLT) was apprehended after an exchange of heavy firing between the militants and security forces.
The cadre identified as Jiyo Tungjang alias Mensing Tokbi was nabbed following hours of a gunbattle between the militants and the security forces. He is the self-styled deputy chairman of the outfit. One 7.65 pistol, one magazine, 5 rounds of live bullets and one mobile phone were seized from his possession.
It may be mentioned that the counter-insurgency operation was launched after a JCB worker, identified as Abil Hussain Laskar hailing from Silchar was abducted a week back. After receiving inputs from the arrestee, the police along with the CRPF launched a joint operation near the Dokomoka area and rescued the abductee. One .22 pistol, magazine and 3 live bullets were recovered from the spot.
The arrested Tokbi during his interrogation has revealed that the activities of militancy have increased in the hill region and the cadres are equipped with AK series rifle.
It may be noted, the KPLT was formed at an undisclosed location on January 8th, 2011 with an objective of carving an Autonomous Karbi State out of Assam.
