Political activist Irom Chanu Sharmila (46), popularly known as the “Iron Lady” of Manipur gave birth to two twin girls on the International Mother’s day celebrated on May 12th, 2019.
She and her husband, Desmond Coutinho, a British national have named their daughters Nix Sakhi and Autumn Tara. The twins were delivered at around 9.20 am through a C-section at Cloudnine’s Malleswaram branch.
The Iron Lady of Manipur known for her 16-year hunger strike against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the state had moved to Kodaikanal after breaking her fast in August 2016.
“The nurses here have been celebrating with me. My daughters have been born on Mother’s Day and I am doubly happy because of that. I feel that is significant,” she said, as quoted by The Indian Express.
She said that their first daughter, Nix Sakhi, has been named after her mother, Irom Sakhi, who had died several months back. Their second daughter has been named after “a Buddhist goddess”.
