Guwahati, March 15, 2019
Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has “invited” the leaders of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) to the State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at Lichubagan, Hengrabari in Guwahati for “some tea” and to finalise the seat-sharing pact.
It may be mentioned that two months after pulling out over the much-debated Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, the AGP and BJP are back as allies in poll-bound Assam. The Lok Sabha elections in Assam will be held in three phases on April 11th, 18th and 23rd, 2019. The results of the election will be announced on May 23rd, 2019.
The AGP will announce the name of the candidates on March 17th, 2019. A delegation of the AGP will fly to New Delhi on March 15th, 2019 to finalise the seat-sharing deal with BJP president Amit Shah.
On the other hand, the ruling BJP has shortlisted panel of names of prospective candidates for 10 of the Lok Sabha constituencies from Assam. The BJP plans to contest in 10 of the 14 Lok Sabha seats from Assam in the ensuing elections.
The BJP will leave Kaliabor, Dhubri and Barpeta constituencies for the AGP and the Kokrajhar seat for Bodoland People’s Front, which is going to field Assam Social Welfare Minister Pramila Rani Brahma for Kokrajhar Lok Sabha seat. It may be mentioned that the AGP wants to put up its own candidate from Mangaldai as well.
On March 14th, 2019, the BJP leaders held a discussion with AGP president Atul Bora, working president Keshab Mahanta and other senior leaders of the regional party at the AGP’s head-office at Ambari.
