Mary Kom becomes 1st Indian Woman Boxer to win gold at CWG

Guwahati, April 14: MC Mary Kom, who made her debut at the Commonwealth Games, has succeeded in adding another medal to her cabinet by winning the gold in women’s 45-48kg category boxing by thrashing Kristina O’Hara of Northern Ireland. With this win, the 35-year-old boxer from Manipur has become the first woman from India to win a gold in Boxing at the Commonwealth Games.

Mary Kom who belongs to the Kom tribe from Manipur is a five-time world champion and an Olympic bronze medalist.

Mary Kom’s win has brought laurels not only to the people of Manipur and the Northeastern region but also to the whole country.

It may be mentioned that the boxer had also claimed the Asian Championships gold about five months ago. She also won silver at the Strandja Memorial Tournament in Bulgaria before this win.

With this win, India has got a total of 18 gold, medals at the Commonwealth Games, 2018 in Gold Coast, Australia.
