Meghalaya’s new Chief Justice Biswanath Somadder who travelled more than 2000 Kilometres by road from Prayagraj via Kolkata to Shillong went into home quarantine right after taking the oath.
The Chief Justice following all national protocols started his journey amidst the ongoing pandemic. Following this, after he took the oath as the new CJ, honouring the state protocols, he went into 14-days home quarantine.
He was sworn in as the new CJ by Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy.
His chauffeur drove him from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh via Kolkata, where he stayed at his residence briefly. The entire trip took almost a week.
However, several criticize the “sudden appointment” of the Chief Justice amidst the pandemic to which Meghalaya’s Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that the judiciary needs Chief Justice to operate just like there is a need of a Chief Minister in a State or an Army General in the Army.
