It is exactly six months and six days after releasing the video, where he hinted to join politics after his retirement, former additional chief secretary to the Assam Government MGVK Bhanu on February 7th, 2019 confirmed his joining in a 134-year-old political party – Congress ahead of the 17th general election to be held this year.
Talking to TIME8 over a telephonic conversation this afternoon, Bhanu said, “Yes, I am joining Congress soon. But, it is not announced yet officially,”.
According to sources, the bureaucrat will join the party on February 11th, 2019 and also contest the Lok Sabha election from Tezpur constituency.
Bhanu, who also served as the additional chief secretary to the Labour and Welfare Department of the state is considered as a strong contender on Congress ticket against Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP).
It may be mentioned that Bhanu in a video on July 31st, 2019 had said that he would join public life after his retirement from government service. Later, there had been media reports on the bureaucrat’s joining in the saffron party – BJP and he was likely to replace MP RP Sharma in the LS election from Tezpur constituency.
“I am only retiring from government service and not from public life. I will stay in Assam. I will try to contribute service for the people of the state after gaining the experience during my service period,” Bhanu had said in the video.
The 1985 batch IAS officer – Bhanu, who also served as the additional chief secretary to Panchayat and Rural Development Department, originally hails from Andhra Pradesh.
