Gohpur, March 8, 2019
With the Lok Sabha elections round the corner, MGVK Bhanu, who joined the Congress in Guwahati last month, visited a total of nine tea gardens in Gohpur on March 8th, 2019.
Former top bureaucrat of Assam (1985-batch), Bhanu, who retired last year, has expressed a wish to represent the Congress in the ensuing general elections from Tezpur constituency.
The Congress leader, who originally hails from Andhra Pradesh, was seen interacting with the tea garden labourers about the initiatives of the Congress and how the Bharatiya Janata Party “cheated” the tea garden labourers.
Speaking to media persons at the Purupbari Tea Estate, he said, “The tea garden labourers should receive Rs 391 as daily wage but they are receiving Rs 167 for the last 14 months. The tea garden labourers have been deprived of their rights.”
“Free rice won’t do any good to them (tea garden workers) if they have been deprived of proper wages.”, said Bhanu while talking to Time8.
Bhanu has served as secretary and commissioner to the chief minister and as additional chief secretary of the state during the Tarun Gogoi government.
The general elections, 2019 are expected to be held in April and May 2019 to constitute the 17th Lok Sabha. In the last general elections, the Congress won just three seats out of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state while the BJP won seven seats.
