Assam University students come out in support of Citizenship Bill

Silchar, January 11: In the wake of the large-scale state-wide protest against the passage of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Silchar wore a different picture on Thursday as a massive demonstration was carried out by the students of Assam University in support of the Bill.

A large number of students of the University assembled in front of the main gate of the University holding placards and raising slogans in support of the Citizenship Bill.

The students put up a huge banner in front of the gate which read, ‘We support Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.’

The students shouted slogans like, “We denounce chauvinistic nationalism”, “Give up narrow mentality”, “We are proud to be Bengali and Indian” and so on.

“We don’t understand why the people are protesting against the Bill. Today we have come out to support the Bill and we want it to be passed in the Rajya Sabha. We strongly condemn the students who are opposing the Bill,” said the agitating students.

It may be mentioned that Citizenship Bill was passed at the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

The Bill was stalled in the Rajya Sabha following strong opposition from the Congress along with other parties.

The Citizenship Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha in 2016 to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955. The Bill amends the Citizenship Act, 1955 to make illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, eligible for citizenship.
