Guwahati, April 14, 2019
The voice of the cuckoo, the lilting Bihu songs to the beating of drums and cymbals accompanied by the mellifluous notes of pepa and dhol filled the air to mark the beginning of Rongali Bihu festivities.
Keeping up with the tradition like every year, former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi attended the Guwahati Bihu Sanmilani at Latasil Playground on April 14th, 2019. Gogoi was seen dancing to the beats of dhol as he joined the celebrations on the last day of Chowt (Assamese month) observed as Goru Bihu (for cattle).
The former chief minister has been attending the Rongali Bihu celebration at Latasil ground in Guwahati for many years.
“Rongali Bihu is a special occasion for the people of Assam. We look forward to this festival the entire year. Rongali Bihu has contributed in enriching the Assamese culture, tradition and language. I believe, if one is not a Bihu Boliya (Bihu lover), then he or she is not a true Axomiya,” said Gogoi.
Dressed in dhoti-kurta, he danced with the little bihuwas and bihuotis and wished the people a happy and prosperous Assamese New Year. Gogoi also appealed for lasting peace.
