‘Laden’ Died Last Year: Suklabaidya On Capturing ‘Krishna’

The captured 'Krishna', weighing around 5 tonnes, has been transferred to the Orang National Park in Darrang district

Putting all speculations to rest, Assam Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya on November 13th, 2010 dismissed the tagging of the captured elephant in Assam’s Goalpara as ‘Laden’. “The elephant named ‘Laden’ met a natural death last year. This has been proved during a survey conducted by the state forest department. The local people also confirmed the same,” he said while addressing a press meet in Guwahati.

He added, “The elephant which we captured had left his herd and since then used to roam in and around Goalpara. This elephant killed five persons in one single night and created terror in the region.” The pachyderm named as ‘Krishna’ was captured on November 11th, 2019 in Goalpara’s Rongjuli forest area.

The adult male elephant used to roam in several areas of Goalpara district destroying croplands and killing human beings. It was captured by using a tranquillizer by a team led by BJP MLA from Sootea, Padma Hazarika. Six domestic elephants were engaged in capturing ‘Krishna’.

The captured ‘Krishna’, weighing around 5 tonnes, has been transferred to the Orang National Park in Darrang district. On November 12th, 2019, thousands of people from around the Goalpara district gathered to see the shift.

Last month, the elephant trampled five persons to death in a state of ‘musth’. Following this, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal ordered its tranquillisation and translocation of the rogue elephant.

The elephant was named ‘Krishna’ by Hazarika as it was captured on the eve of Raas. Hazarika was also lauded by Sonowal and Suklabaidya for leading from the front and using his expertise to capture the elephant.
