Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) advisor Akhil Gogoi on October 10th, 2019, said that an illegal immigrant will become the Chief Minister of the state if the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is passed.
Slamming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government over its move to reintroduce the Citizenship Bill, Gogoi said, “A Hindu Bangladeshi will become the next Chief Minister of the state if the Bill is passed. Around 1.9 crore Hindu Bangladeshis will arrive in India and will be granted Indian Citizenship if the Bill is implemented.”
Besides, the KMSS leader said that the condition of Assam will be the same as that of Tripura if the Bill is passed. “The BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh are determined to implement the Bill. People of the state are still not aware of the possible dire consequences they have to face once the Bill is implemented. People have to stand in unison against the BJP’s move on the bill which is against the interest of the greater Assamese community,” Gogoi added.
The firebrand leader announced that the KMSS and other 69 supporting organisations will conduct an awareness drive against the Bill across the state and also hold protests demanding immediate withdrawal of the Bill.
“We will stage a protest in front of the Meghdoot Bhawan in Guwahati on October 11th, 2019,” he informed. Gogoi also urged the All Assam Students’ Union and its supporting organisations to come forward in the matter.
On October 3rd, 2019, the Nagaland Joint Committee on Prevention of Illegal Immigrants in Kohima, Northeast Forum for Indigenous People in Itanagar and Manipur People Against Citizenship Amendment Bill in Imphal staged protest opposing the Centre’s move on the Bill.
It may be mentioned that the Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on January 8th, 2019 but lapsed in the Rajya Sabha. On October 1st, 2019, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in a public awakening meeting in Kolkata, West Bengal, that the government will bring the Bill.
