Over 6,500 Rape Cases Registered In Assam In 3.5 Years

Over 6,500 rape cases were registered in Assam during the last three and a half years, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary informed the Assam Assembly on November 30th, 2019.

Patowary said in a written reply to a query by AGP MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita that 6,528 rape cases have been registered between April 2016 and October 2019 across the state. A total of 248 cases were registered in Guwahati during the same period.

A report published by the National Crime Records Bureau stated that a total of 23,082 out of 3,59,849 cases of crime against women were registered in Assam in 2017, is 6.4 per cent of the total crimes in the country.

A total of 1,772 rape cases were reported in Assam in 2017. On the other hand, 27 cases of rape and murder reported in Assam in 2017. Assam also recorded the highest number of dowry-related deaths in the Northeast. Assam recorded 171 dowry-related deaths in 2017 followed by 33 in Tripura and one in Meghalaya. No dowry-related cases were reported in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Sikkim and Nagaland.
