Tarun Gogoi was born at Rangajan Tea Estate, erstwhile Sivasagar district, now the Jorhat district of Assam in 1936

Chaygaon legislator Rekibuddin Ahmed and Congress workers gifted a ginormous cake to former Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi to celebrate his 85th birthday on October 11th, 2019. The cake was cut by Gogoi at his residence in Guwahati amidst cheers and good wishes.

The veteran Congress leader’s wife Dolly Gogoi, son MP Gaurav Gogoi and daughter Chandrima Gogoi along his grandchildren were also present on the occasion. Leader of Opposition in Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia and Congress leader Bobbeeta Sharma also joined in the birthday celebration.

Senior Gogoi was born at Rangajan Tea Estate, erstwhile Sivasagar district, now the Jorhat district of Assam in 1936. Fondly called Punakon by his parents, Gogoi has served six terms as a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Lok Sabha. He had led the Congress party to a record three consecutive electoral victories in Assam as Chief Minister from May 17th, 2001 –May 24th, 2016.

Speaking to Time8, Gogoi said, “It’s a memorable day for me and my family. One might age with time but the mind and heart should always remain young. It gives you the passion and pushes to try out new things in life. I always consider myself a young man.”

Several leaders cutting across party lines wished Gogoi on his birthday. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also took to Twitter to wish the Congress leader. “Warm birthday greetings to former Chief Minister Shri @tarun_gogoi da. Praying for your good health and long life,” Sonowal wrote.

Gogoi along with his family also visited the Mothers Old Age Home in Guwahati.  Gogoi’s daughter Chandrima reached Assam on October 7th, 2019. An elated Gogoi took to Twitter to share his joy, “On Navami when i was returning from Puja, it was a great surprise for me all of a sudden when i saw my daughter Chandrima in my residence. She came all along from San Francisco, without giving any information to celebrate my 85th birthday which is falling on 11th October, 2019.”

Gogoi mentioned that for a father, such a ‘gesture from a daughter and her family definitely gives immense pleasure and satisfaction’. “Such a relationship within the family in these days, particularly which is full of stress is very essential,” Gogoi tweeted.
