Tension grips Assam-Meghalaya border after a Block-II resident killed in scuffle

Nongpoh, September 13: Tension prevailed in a disputed Assam-Meghalaya border village after a Khasi residing in the Block-II died following an assault by another person on Tuesday.

According to police, around 10 pm on September 9 Romesh Thapa of Umsohphoh, Madan Umwang, assaulted Tyngshain Mukhim (37) following a scuffle at Umsohphoh village under Block-II in the Ri Bhoi border area.

The victim was severely injured and was rushed to NEIGRIHMS. He was later taken back to Khlieh Umwang by his relatives. He succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.

Reportedly, the administration had been in touch with its West Karbi Anglong counterparts in Assam and the Assam police came to Khlieh Umwang to take the body for postmortem. The family of the deceased reportedly did not allow the Assam police to take the body for post-mortem.

In the meantime, the Ri-Bhoi police also rushed to the village on Wednesday for inquiry and wanted to take the body for postmortem.

Later, with the intervention of higher authorities from both the states, the body was taken to Nongpoh Civil Hospital before it was handed over to the family for last rites.
