Over Rs 168 crore worth of seized liquor destroyed in Guwahati


Guwahati, August 10: State Excise Minister Parimal Suklabaidya on Friday crushed over 6 lakh seized liquor bottles over crores of rupees under a road roller in Lokhra, Guwahati.

It may be noted that way back in 2016, a huge quantity of illegal IMFL and beer bottles of assorted brands were seized from four different places at Khatkati in Karbi Anglong. Around 17,410 cases of Indian-made foreign liquor in 14 Guwahati-bound trucks were seized by the police.

In this regard, the Bureau of Investigations Economic Offences (BIEO) had lodged four cases – 21/2016, 22/2016, 23/2016, 24/2016. During the investigation, the BIEO arrested 13 people and four charge sheets have been filed. The arrested persons have been identified as Feroz Alam Khan, Harbhajan Singh, Umesh Kumar Jaiswal, Umesh Roy, Kamaljit Singh, Jaikom Singh, Rajesh Jalan, Bijay Phangso, Danny Chanda, Jakir Hussain, Lakshman Singh, Ashok Prasad Yadav and Ganesh Chandra Das.

The estimated amount of the seized liquor is Rs 168,54,31,349.

As per the instruction of the court, along with the officials of the State Excise department, in presence of magisterate, Suklabaidya crushed the bottles. The crushing activity was videographed, as per order.

“Whoever violates the law, will be dealth with strictly,” said the Minister.
