Guwahati, January 12: Former Assam Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Tarun Gogoi said he would break the prohibitory orders and court arrest if the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 is scrapped by the Centre.
“By prohibiting all sorts of protests, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Assam government is curtailing the democratic rights of people. They are running the state in an autocratic manner,” said Gogoi.
He added, “I will violate Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure if the Centre does not withdraw the Bill. I will lead people and raise slogans. I would not mind going to jail.”
The Deputy Commissioner of Police, East Police District has imposed Section 144 CrPC in parts of the East Police District.
As per the order, assembly of more than five persons, agitations, demonstrations, processions and shouting slogans in the entire East Police District covering Dispur, Bhangagarh, Basistha, Hatigaon, Sonapur and areas under Khetri Police Station are strictly prohibited without prior permission.
Gogoi also lambasted the Assam government for booking Sahitya Akademi awardee Dr Hiren Gohain , peasant leader Akhil Gogoi, activist Manjit Mahanta under sedition charge
“It shows police raaj is going on in Hitler-Mussolini’s rule. It is misuse of power,” he said.
