Akhil Gogoi ‘ready’ to go to jail, Hiren Gohain says ‘they missed my point’

Guwahati, January 10: Firebrand peasant leader Akhil Gogoi on Thursday said that he is ready to go to jail for the people of the state.

A sedition case has been registered against Gogoi, prominent Assam intellectual and academic Hiren Gohain and former journalist Manjit Mahanta for making a statement that there would be no option except demanding an “Independent Assam” if the Centre does not withdraw the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and change its decision to grant Indian citizenship on the basis of religion.

A suo motu FIR was filed at Latashil police Station under Sections 120(B), 121, 123 and 124(A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

On the other hand, Gohain said that “they didn’t get his point”.

“They misinterpreted my speech. Did I only speak about an ‘independent Assam’? My point was that we will be left with no other option after carrying prolonged battle against the government’s move,” he said.

The sedition charge against the Gogoi, Mahanta and Gohain has evoked sharp reactions across the state.

“We have registered the case for proper investigation against the chief speakers who attended the programme,” said said Deepak Kumar, Commissioner of Police, Guwahati.

The meeting during Dhikkar Divas (Condemnation Day) , where the statements were made, was organised by the ‘Save Assam’ forum in Dighalipukhuri on Monday.

“They (the government) are trying to suppress the voice of the Assamese people,” said Bedanta Laskar, KMSS leader.
