As Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Fit India Movement on August 29th, 2019, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma launched the “walk to work” initiative as part of the movement.

As a part of the initiative, Sangma along with his team walked from his residence to his office at Yojana Bhawan in Shillong, Meghalaya.

The Chief Minister who announced the initiative at the micro-blogging site also uploaded a 1 minute 52 seconds video and said, “This initiative of walk to work is launched in consonance with the Fit India Movement and we are planning that at least once a week we can walk to office. This has multiple benefits and is not just all about health, but you cut cost on fuel on vehicles, and lead to fewer traffic jams,”.

Conrad urged the people of the state to walk to their workplace whenever it is possible and said that people should feel the need to walk.

“This initiative will also reduce traffic congestion in the Shillong city and when one starts walking it will not only benefit him/her on a personal level but the entire city as a whole,” added Sangma.

It may be mentioned, during his Mann Ki Baat address on August 25th, 2019, Modi while speaking about the Fit India Movement said that we need to keep ourselves fit and the nation has to be fit. “It will be an interesting campaign for the country, children, the elderly, the young, women, everyone this will be your movement,” said Modi.
