Barpeta, April 17, 2019
Congress candidate from Kaliabor Gaurav Gogoi on April 17th, 2019 asked the Assam BJP president Ranjeet Dass and Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to apologies for their unfortunate statements that “Barpeta is a Pakistan”.
Addressing a rally for Congress candidate Abdul Khaleque from Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency, Gogoi launched a scathing attack on the ruling BJP and said, “The BJP is a capitalist party.” Besides, slamming Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his self-proclamation as a chowkidar of the nation, Gogoi questioned, “Which chowkidar of the country goes to the United States every month?”
Talking about the Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Gogoi said, “AIUDF is not a factor for Congress. The party had no suitable candidate to field in the Kalilbor parliamentary constituency so it did not.”
The Assam Congress president Ripun Bora slammed the AGP for re-forging alliance with the BJP only for hunger for power. “The AGP, that broke alliance with the BJP following a row over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill earlier this year, re-forged alliance with the BJP only to remain in power.” “AGP and BJP are the two sides of the same coin,” Bora added.
Addressing the rally the candidate Abdul Khaleque said, “Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora and a number of leaders will soon join the BJP by betraying the indigenous people of the state. Congress is committed to working for a better future of the people of the state and the land. We cannot let another party ruin the future of the state.”
Khaleque further said that former Assam Chief Minister and senior AGP leader Prafulla Kumar Mahanta is a man of principles for which he has not participated in campaigning till date this election.
Leader of the opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia was also present in the election rally held at the Chayaram Girls’ High School playground in Assam’s Barpeta district.
