Guwahati Blast Injures 12, Security Beefed Up

Guwahati, May 15, 2019

Security in Guwahati has been beefed up following the grenade blast near the Guwahati Central shopping mall located at the RG Baruah road, which left 12 people injured.

The injured people are BSF jawans – Amulya Ratan Mahato and Ramesh Lal while others are Fardeen Hasnain Rahman, Ahmed Kumar, Amit Kansal, Riya Kansal, Hirakjyoti Baruah, Kalyan Baishya, Adward Mama, Bijay Kumar Shah and Sultan Jahidur Rahman.

Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma confirmed that the patients admitted to the GMCH – BSF jawans – Amulya ratan Mahato and Ramesh Lal, Fardeen Hasnain Rahman, Bijay Kumar Shah and Sultan Jahidur Rahman are in stable health condition.

The director general of police Kuladhar Saikia said “We are investigating the matter. We cannot figure out who was behind the attack.”

Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, Deepak Kumar, who reached the spot along with other officials, said, “We are investigating the matter. Police might be targeted. Around six people injured in the incident. No casualties reported yet.”

Speaking to the media persons, Assam Minister of State (Independent) Urban Development, Health and Family welfare Minister Pijush Hazarika said, “A total of five patients admitted to GMCH while two in Nemcare and four in KGMT hospital. All stable except the one at GMCH who is undergoing an operation for haemoperitoneum (blood in the abdomen). He is also stable.”

Congress leader Bobbeeta Sharma, who contested the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Guwahati Lok Sabha Constituency, also condemned the incident and demanded probe into the incident.

Meanwhile, the Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio also condemned the incident and tweeted as: “I am saddened about the blast in #Guwahati #Assam which targeted civilians. I condemn the horrific act and hope the perpetrators are brought to justice. My prayers for the speedy recovery of those injured.”

Sitting Congress MP from MP Gaurav Gogoi, while condemning the heinous incident, tweeted as: “I strongly condemn the grenade blast in Guwahati, Assam. This nothing but a weak attempt to intimidate the peace loving people of Assam. Assamese people will respond with courage and strength. My prayers for the injured. I urge the state government to take stringent action.”
