In a bid to spread awareness on the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security (MRSS) Act 2016 and keep a tab on the illegal immigration in the state, the Meghalaya police organized a workshop on September 25th, 2019 at the Police Headquarters, Shillong.
The workshop started from 10 am onwards which had an opening speech by Deputy Inspector General of Police (Anti Infiltration Directorate), O. Pasi, followed by an opening address by Director General of Police, R. Chandranathan.
The workshop also had a series of events like interactions between resource persons, a discussion session chaired by Additional Director of Police, H. Nongpluh and many other activities.
It may be mentioned, the MRSS Act 2016 was passed to check the influx of illegal immigration to the state. This act was passed during the Mukul Sangma government to ensure a safe and secure environment in the state.
Recently, post the publication of National Register of Citizens in Assam, the neighboring state is contemplating to add more teeth to the act check illegal immigration in the state since the last few years.
As per reports, the state government will soon hold a consultative meeting with all political parties in the state to discuss and propose an amendment to the existing provisions in the act and once agreed, the same may be passed in the form of an ordinance.
