Assam University prohibits protests within periphery of campus

Guwahati, January 12: The authorities of the Assam University have strictly prohibited any assemble/procession/dharna or any sort of gathering of people without prior permission within the periphery of varsity campus until further orders.

In a written order by the Registrar of the varsity, Sanjib Bhattacharjee has stated that violation of the order and person (s) involved in such violation will be held responsible. The order has been approved by the Vice-chancellor.

It may be mentioned that a group of Assamese students had taken out a candlelight vigil to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 on Wednesday.

However, on Friday a group of students of the varsity also came out in support of the Bill stating that “there is nothing wrong in the Bill”.

The scenario became ugly after senior Advocate of Gauhati High Court and founder president of All Cachar-Karimganj-Hailakandi Students’ Association (ACKHSA), Pradip Dutta Roy threatened the Assamese students studying at the Assam University for protesting against the Bill.

Later, an FIR was registered against Roy by Durnitibirudhi Oikya Mancha at Golaghat Police Station.
