Guwahati, January 14: The Handique Girls’ College students’ body banned the entry of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders inside the college campus until the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 is scrapped.
It may be mentioned that the Gauhati University students’ body has also banned the entry of the saffron party leaders in the varsity campus.
The Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on January 8 while the Rajya Sabha rejected the bill in its session on January 9.
Besides, the Asom Gana Parishad informed that the party would launch a series of agitations from January 18 in protest against the Bill across the state.
The Citizenship Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha in 2016 to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955. The Bill amends the Citizenship Act, 1955 to make illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, eligible for citizenship.
